Part time contract from November 1st, 2025, to October 31st, 2026. Renewable.
640 hours/year at $40/hour (approximately 12 hours per week with flexibility for greater hours during busy times)
MPWS is a 100% volunteer driven society since 1999 with a mission to “Assess, preserve and restore the ecosystem of the Millard-Piercy Watershed”.
MPWS seeks a person to act as a contractor providing services as a coordinator/manager of our programs.
The candidate should have the capability to grow beyond the role of program coordinator/manager and develop leadership and funding capabilities to sustain and grow MPWS.
The contractor will work with guidance from and report to the MPWS board of Directors.
The contractor’s responsibilities will include:
Management of 5 programs:
Habitat Enhancement, including in-stream projects and riparian restoration;
Fish Monitoring, including smolt counting, spawner surveys and juvenile salmon trapping;
Water Monitoring, including water quality testing and 6PPD-q sampling;
Education and Outreach, including watershed walks, family watershed day, preparing MPWS newsletters 2 times per year and social media updates;
Urban Development, including liaison with local governments and development referral review for sensitive habitats.
General Duties:
Maintaining records of program results and summarizing and presenting the relevant data;
Volunteer management, training, supervision and recruitment (approx. 30 volunteers);
Assistance with editing and updating the MPWS Program Manual;
Exploring funding sources and grants and submitting applications and reports;
Attending and taking minutes of MPWS board meetings and reporting to the board monthly;
Developing a budget for the next calendar year and presenting to the board;
Interacting with supporting organizations and local government including DFO, (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) PSF (Pacific Salmon Foundation), CVRD (Comox Regional District), CVCP (Comox Valley Community Partnership), the City of Courtenay, and environmental consultants
The contractor will work from home or remotely and the schedule will be determined by the MPWS program activity schedule.
The contractor must live in the Comox Valley.
A laptop computer is provided exclusively for MPWS related communications,
reports and documents.
Meetings at various locations in the Comox Valley will be required as well as field/outdoor activities for fish and stream monitoring, therefore the contractor must have access to a vehicle for transportation.
Some evening or weekend work will occasionally be required.
We are looking for a self-confident person with good interpersonal and communication skills, capable of managing multiple tasks. Qualifications must include:
A background or qualifications in ecological sciences
Excellent communication in person and in writing
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint or equivalent software. Ability to learn software such as Mailchimp and Jotform. Knowledge of mapping (e.g. QGIS) would be beneficial
A one-year contract from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2026, is proposed
The contract has a 30-day termination agreement
The contract is based on working part-time for 640 hours per year at an average of 54 hours per month. Invoices and time reports are to be submitted monthly
A training period for the first 3 months of up to 100 hours is proposed to cover familiarization with MPWS programs, projects and future plans
This time will be in addition to contract time for program management
